HObby Lobby Vs. Affordable Health Care
Contraception: a device or drug serving to prevent pregnancy. Studies have shown that 99% of women from the range of the age they can have kids to the age they can't, have used at least one contraceptive method whether it is a condom, birth control or the morning after pill. Every girl who has ever had sexual intercourse have probably used it. Contraception helps raped victims, teens, poor people and people who are not ready to be parents. Still some people are against this coverage that is covered by Affordable healthcare. (Neergaard, Lauran)
Affordable Healthcare came into effect August 1, 2012 and about 47 million women have benefited from this. From breastfeeding support, supplies and counseling to the president's new birth control mandate which would insure coverage of women's birth control without copayments or deductibles. If the person has insurance through their work, the employers are required to provide its workers with free sterilization and contraception. (Bradford, Harry).

On Sep 12, 2012 the Oklahoma City-based crafts retail chain Hobby Lobby filed a lawsuit claiming the Affordable Care Act's mandate to cover the costs of the morning after pill for employees is forcing the company's owners "to violate their deeply held religious beliefs under threat of heavy fines, penalties and lawsuits." (Bradford, Harry).
I would have to say that I agree with Obama's birth control mandate. If Hobby lobby refuses to cooperate with the morning after pill mandate this could spread to other coverage, a great example would be the cost of cancer treatments because it is ‘playing god’. These problems need to be brought front and center and discussed by everyone. Employees are paid and can buy anything they want with their money; Employers cannot tell them how to spend their money. Employers cannot dictate their employee’s healthcare decisions. The birth control does not cause abortion, it prevents it. One person commented on the Facebook page against Hobby Lobby says on Facebook “That Hobby Lobby's owners need to mind their own business, and learn to live and let live.
A study released from Washington University School of Medicine found out that by providing free birth control to women increases the effect of contraceptive use. According to a four-year study of more than 9,200 low-income women in the St. Louis area, the women who lack insurance coverage will try to choose the more-effective, long-lasting forms of contraception and as a result of this, they experience far fewer unplanned pregnancies when they are not affected by cost.
The chart above represent that with availability to free birth control, will lower the national birthrate significantly by 28 teens, while abortion rates were less than half of the regional and national abortion rates. The researches of this study are confident that the CHOICE program could prevent one abortion for every 79 to 137 women who are given a choice between free birth control options. According to the director of the women's health policy, Alina Salganicoff she would like to reduce the unintended pregnancies and abortion rates by allowing the women to have a no-cost contraception access. (Fact Sheet).
The Planned Parenthood officials have noted that President Obama's health reform law will help lower the abortion rate in the United States. Their study shows that the Affordable Care Act's birth control will benefit by dramatically reducing the need for women to get abortions once The Affordable Care Act is fully implemented. (Culp Ressier).
The women of America need to have full information, full coverage and full choice for what type of birth control works best for them. As every study has shown that lower rates of unintended pregnancies are strongly related to the increased access of contraceptives and the CHOICE project reinforces the fact that a high access to contraception involves removing the cost barriers to birth control. (Culp-Ressier).
The American women in their reproductive age are currently spending around 68 percent more out of pocket health care costs than men do, because of the high contraception costs. A great example is that a years’ worth of oral birth control pill cost around 1,200 dollars out of pocket, and nearly one in three women reported that they have stopped using their contraceptive method, or have used it less consistently and effectively, because they are unable to afford it. (Fact Sheet).
Starting January, 2012 Hobby Lobby will lose around 1.3 million dollars daily in fines if it does not provide the contraception coverage. According to lawsuits, Hobby Lobby has supporters, and many of its fans have even praised the company on its Facebook page with many posts reading, "I support Hobby Lobby." (Chiaramonte, perry).
But there are some that are against Hobby Lobby there is even a petition to boycott Hobby Lobby that has currently reached more than 70,000 signatures. Hobby Lobby is not one of the first companies to fight against Obama’s morning after pill coverage mandate on religious grounds. The catholic owners of Denver based Hercules Industries has won temporary court injunction over the summer, which meant that the company was not required to uphold the mandate. Catholic churches from across the country have protested against Obama’s birth control mandate, which urges parishioners to appeal to Washington directly. There is at the moment twenty-seven lawsuits against many provisions of the Obama care are currently pending. (Chiaramonte, perry).
It has been shown in studies done, that contraception such as birth control is highly critical for the well-being of women in the country, and to their families. Studies have shown that teenage women who are able to easily access the contraceptives and use them in a consistent matter have a greater chance of graduating from high school and establish careers, as they do not have to worry about having a child at a critical time in their life. For the teenage women who lack the access to contraceptives, can experience many disadvantages compared to those who have full access. The teenagers will achieve less education, as the baby starts to take up most of their time, and they earn lowers salaries since they cannot finish high school and cannot complete their degree. All of these disadvantages add up and will affect their children as they are growing up, and the children are also less likely to finish their high school and have higher rates of going to prison. (Neergaard, Lauran).
The costs often determine whether we can choose and maintain the appropriate method of using birth control, especially during these hard times. As a result families with low incomes have higher rates of abortion. But most of this is at the same time not true, a 2008 survey report form Guttmacher institutes, Fact Sheet has shown a vast majority of the abortion rates in the United States were caused by unintended pregnancies, regardless of their race or economic status. Overall, nearly half of all the pregnancies in the U.S. were unintended.
Under the past system in the U.S., the women who have had health insurance had to be able to pay a deductible before they could get any coverage for their birth control. And once the coverage kicked in, they still had to make a co-payment for every time they needed to refill their prescription, as a result contraceptives become an unaffordable luxury for the women struggling to keep food on their tables. The new system had eliminated this kind of burden for the millions of women in the U.S. (Neergaard, Lauran).
Hobby Lobby overall is well known for being a good company to work for. They pay a living wage, they offer pretty good benefits to employees. It is a great place to spend your dollar there because they have reasonable prices and give back to the community. I would like for them to keep on doing what they do. But they must also realize that their employees pay into an insurance system, and expect great services. One of a few important services is contraception. The problem is not paying the 30 dollars a month for the pill, it is the doctors visit to make sure you are using the right dosage. It is the follow-ups to ensure there are no problems with your body. So it is not the product, it is the necessary medical supervision you must get that is associated with it.
According to Neergaard Lauran, the biggest provider of low cost women's health care is being shut down, she says that women certainly need their own private insurance to provide more value for their money. Make birth control more affordable. The sad truth is that the one cause of poverty for women in America is unplanned pregnancy and out of wedlock birth. So I believe that their stance against the morning after pill is wrong. I think that a company willing to do what is fair for their employees, in despite the current "trend" with big stores and the local chains should be possibly willing to listen to fair arguments.
Contraception should be covered for women because of their ability to carry children and suffer nine long months. Therefore their parts should be taken care of, just like normal organs, the sad truth about women who have unwanted pregnancy is that it has long-term psychological effects, making it a mental health issue, and the physical health consequences pregnancy does to the body. But on the other side the government should not make you do something that’s against your religion.
