Contraception Coverage
Contraception has been a controversial issue for a very long time that whether the insurance companies should cover the contraception usage. The issues that contraception is having are that many religious companies and groups do not support such things, due to their religious beliefs. Another issue is that there are woman who are not financially stable, and who are not ready to have a child. There are groups of researchers with proven facts that show that if contraception does become more available to women it can help lower abortion rates, and lower the chances on unintended pregnancy. (Mosher, WD)
According to Guttmacher Institute contraception is widely used among almost all teenage females who are at risk of unintended pregnancy. Contraception also known as birth control can come in many forms like condoms, birth control pills, and morning after pills and etc. Their job is all somewhat the same, and there are many ways that contraception helps us. (Guttmacher Institute).
However people have different point of views on contraception, some say using contraception is being responsible, others argue and say that is it irresponsible and some don’t use it because it is said to be against their religion. Whatever the argument maybe we still need contraception, not just for woman who use it for birth control but for treatment for acne and some even use it for cramps or menstrual pain relief.

The use of contraception is old as time. From the years dating back to 1850 BCE humans have relied on contraceptives to avoid pregnancy. Omnia M Samra-Latif, a MD clinical faculty states, “Ancient writings noted on the Kahun papyrus dating to 1850 BCE refer to contraceptive techniques using a vaginal pessary of crocodile dung and fermented dough” (Para 1)
Guttmacher institute had done a research on the use of contraceptive in the United States. In the report it stated that about 81 percent of teenage women are currently using a contraceptive method. 54 percent of 2.9 million teenage women who use contraceptives in the United States rely on the pills.
Personally I support contraception. A lot of people don’t know how frightening it feels to think that your girlfriend or wife will have a kid at such a young age or you’re not ready for a kid, till it happens to you. You start thinking about your future and how you would support your kid without a job or a good income, it is impossible to raise a child of your own now days. That’s if it’s a child with your loved one, now imagine if it was a rape victim think of how hard it would be to raise a child without a father. Raising a child you don’t want and having it inside of you for nine months would be really painful.

There are a lot of negative consequences of not using contraceptive methods. For women who are not ready to bear the child, it can cause an unbalance state of mind. The pregnant women will most likely start drinking, smoking, doing drugs, etc. But there are other benefits besides stopping unintended pregnancy. According to the Fact Sheet on Guttmacher institute’s research, it lists the benefits are “ 1. Family planning has well-documented benefits for mothers, newborns, families and communities. Pregnancies that occur too early or too late in a woman’s life, or that are spaced too closely, negatively affect maternal health and increase the risk of prematurity and low birth weight. 2. Women use contraceptives to have healthier pregnancies, and couples use them to help time and space births, and achieve their desired family size. 3. When used correctly, modern contraceptives are extremely effective at preventing pregnancy. The two-thirds of U.S. women at risk of unintended pregnancy who practice contraception consistently and correctly account for only 5% of unintended pregnancies. 5. Many hormonal methods—the pill, vaginal ring, patch, implant and IUD—offer a number of health benefits in addition to contraceptive effectiveness. 6. The most common reason women use oral contraceptives is to prevent pregnancy; however, 58% of pill users also cite no contraceptive health benefits as reasons for using the method. These include treatment for excessive menstrual bleeding, menstrual pain and acne.”
There have been many people or groups against the contraceptive coverage. Groups like Hobby Lobby, A multi billion-dollar company who refuses to give their employee’s this coverage and they are not the only ones against it. The Catholic Church is also against the coverage and use of contraception as catholic bishops consider birth control as an elective drug. They believe that a child is god’s gift and therefor should be kept. According to chastity.com an outreach project of catholic answers they say, “Can a wife say she is faithful except when she has affairs? Can she say that she will give herself totally to her husband as long as he’s rich? Can a husband say the marital act is free except when he forces himself upon his wife? All this is absurd, but contracepting couples contradict their own vows in a similar way when they refuse to be open to God’s gift of life. When it comes down to it, they are afraid of what sex means.”
I believe that is a very wrong way to look at this problem, using contraceptives doesn’t mean we are afraid of sex and in no way does it relate to cheating on you loved one. If they had young daughters that were in high school and were sexually active or were raped would they let the daughters use contraception or would they tell her that its gods gift and keep it. There is no doubt in my mind that they would use contraception rather than let her have a baby at such a young age. They also go on to say “The love between a husband and wife holds a marriage together. A strong marriage holds the family together. Strong families hold society together, and a civilization will stand or fall upon this. “The future of humanity,” according to the Church, “passes by way of the family.”
In the news Richard Murdock a Indiana Republican Senate commented and suggested that pregnancies resulting from rape were “intended” by God. I think that his and that the Catholic Church’s view on this subject is very wrong and I doubt that all Catholics believe this.

Joerg Dreweke a writer for Guttmacher states that about 68 percent of catholic women use a birth control method their church opposes, such as the pill, sterilization, or an IUD. The birth control is a controversial one for many Catholics. There are Catholics who believe that any technique that will interfere with conception is an attempt to play god, which violates “gods word.” There is another end who consider all methods of contraception is viable, even the types that can destroy the embryo.
The Catholic Church believes that contraception or birth control pills is abortion. But that is not the case. (webmd.com) Say’s in their article How Does Hormonal Contraceptives Work. It states that” hormonal contraceptives which include the pill, the patch, and the vaginal ring. These contraceptives include man made estrogen and progestin hormones. These hormones stop the body’s natural cyclical hormones to prevent pregnancy. Pregnancy is prevented by a combination of different factors. The hormonal contraceptive stops the body from ovulating, they also change the cervical mucus to make it more difficult for the sperm to find and fertilize the egg. They can also prevent pregnancies by making the lining around the womb inhospitable for sperm. There is a new option for contraceptives, which is the extended-cycle pill. The first extended-cycle pill is called Seasonale. This pill contains the same hormones as other birth control pills, but they are taken in a longer period and reduce the women’s menstrual periods from 13 periods to 4 periods a year. Therefore, women only menstruate only once each season.”
Overall, I support insurance to cover contraceptive because it lowers abortion, I believe that in the society today, we have the developed medications, that could help the females reduce abortion rates, allows women to take more control over their life, and could solve some economic problems for women, as we will have less abortions which is more expensive then contraceptives. The Catholic Church should allow the hormonal contraceptives because (webmd.com) states since the egg is not being fertilized therefore it is not an embryo and not killing it.
